Thy Kingdom Scum is the latest Rise Above/Metal Blade release from Japanese doom act Church of Misery, a band who seem to have an obsession with serial killers, as all their releases contain tunes that each focus on a specific legendary murderer. That trend continues here with killers such as Gary Heidnik, Dennis Rader, John Linley Frazier, among others, being the topics of the songs. Folks who love vintage Black Sabbath, as well as modern acts like Down or Crowbar, will no doubt relish in the crushing, doomy riffs and whiskey soaked vocals that come at you from every angle here on Thy Kingdom Scum.
Opener "B.T.K." is a plodding, crunchy instrumental, and gets the mood started, leading into the pummeling dirge that is "Lambs to the Slaughter". Huge doom riffs and crashing drums are all the rage on "Brother Bishop", with the Phil Anselmo styled vocals giving the whole song a real Down feel. "Cranley Gardens", which takes a look at the serial killer Dennis Andrew Nilsen (who was also known as the Muswell Hill Murderer and the Kindly Killer), is pure, demonic sludge, while the beefy sounds of "All Hallow's Eve" and "Düsseldorf Monster" feature some seriously heavy bottom end to go along with tortured vocal wailings. Gotta love the cover of the Quatermass tune "One Blind Mice", as the band injects some doomy/punkish flair to what was originally a keyboard dominated prog & hard rock piece.
Doom fans will no doubt find much to like here on Thy Kingdom Scum, as there are plenty of monstrous fuzz-toned riffs to go around in addition to the serial killer themed lyrics, which add an interesting dimension to this style of metal. Good stuff.
