Thinning the Herd: Freedom From the Known

It's been a tumultuous period in the career of Thinning the Herd culminating in drummer Rick Cimato being killed in late 2012. Main man Gavin Spielman and bassist Wes Edmonds regrouped and, as Cimato would have wished, ploughed on making music. They have added Garth Macaleavey behind the drumkit and Freedom From the Known is the result.

Thinning the Herd remain a fairly acquired taste. They are definitely difficult to place generically. They are resolutely heavy as f**k with the awesome "Rabbits" being a prime example, they are sludgetastic, doomy yet quite free-rolling in their song structure and sometimes even evoke early Sabbath. This may well be their finest album yet and let's hope they can keep this line-up settled and forge onwards.
