Hidden Masters: Of this and Other Worlds

The latest album by The Sword has a track on it called "The Hidden Masters" that speaks to the way there are just some things out there that human beings don't know about. I especially like the last part of the song (repeated for emphasis) that says "Look at yourselves / Look at your world / What have you done? / What have you become?" Humans, I think the song is saying, don't always know what they're doing, either with the world, with the knowledge they have, or with each other. These aren't bad questions.

The band Hidden Masters only has a coincidental relationship to The Sword, but their name obviously shares certain thematic qualities with the song. Ultimately, both bands are raising the same kinds of questions—what do we really know? Even though this album is interested in such broad questions, it approaches them with a playful attitude, one that blends late 60s psychedelia with something approaching pop. It's too easy to characterize an album as "smart" or "intelligent" (mostly because these labels get thrown around way too much) but this one is certainly both of those things.

As I mentioned above, the music on this album is pretty much contemporary psychedelic rock soaked in poppy and catchy melodies. Listen to it and you'll hear music that sounds awfully familiar (I'll let readers decide what bands these guys sound like). To me, the best thing about this album is that it channels the past without mindlessly reproducing it. It's a fun collection of songs that are sure to grab the attention of those willing to check it out.

For those who enjoyed Uncle Acid and the Deadbeat's latest album, this debut release should be a welcome addition to their playlist.

My favorite track was "She Broke the Clock of the Long Now," mostly because I know about that clock and find it funny that these guys actually sing about it.

Track Listing:
1. She Broke the Clock of the Long Now

4. See You in the Dark
5. Last Days of the Sun
6. There are More Things
7. Nobody Knows that We're Here
8. Like Candy
