Baroness: Live at Maida Vale

Last August, the members of Baroness were in a nasty bus accident. Most of the band suffered injuries to one extent or another; two of the guys—Matt Maggioni and Allen Blickle—were hurt pretty bad and ultimately decided to leave the band. Not long after the bus crush, John Baizley offered fans a lengthy statement that included some reflections on the experience and how it impacted the band.

Baroness is a terrific band. Their last album, Yellow and Green, did receive some mixed reviews but most people were quick to recognize that the band is generally a force to be reckoned with. Sure, the new music isn't quite as heavy, but who are we to begrudge a little musical experimentation, especially when bands like this write generally good songs?

With Live at Maida Vale, Baroness offers fans a limited edition vinyl recording from the BBC's Maida Vale studios (it's also available as a digital download). The cover art, as always, is striking—a silkscreened version of John Baizley's famous swan. The music—four tracks from the current album—sounds upbeat and confident, a reminder that this band has a lot of talent both in songwriting and in performing. All the songs sound terrific, though I preferred listening to "Cocainium" and "The Line Between."

This release isn't much more than what it claims to be—four songs recorded live on the BBC—but it's worth a listen. The band needed something like this, if only to remind fans that they remain a great band with a bright future.
