Spring and Youth: Between the Irony
Spring and Youth originally released this, their debut album, back in July 2012. But, like lots of other lesser-known bands, these guys have to work that much harder to secure an audience, including finding as many opportunities for reviews and commentary as possible.
The music on this album is eclectic from beginning to end—an odd mixture of jazz, progressive rock and avant-garde sounds. Surrounding all the experimentation is a turn to distorted guitars, a crunching attempt to hold everything together. I can't say that I enjoyed the album very much, mostly because the individual parts didn't add up to as interesting a musical statement as they could have. I did admire both the musicianship and the overall experimental vibe here.
For those interested in this style of music, there are other albums like this that work better. The one I enjoyed the most was Akphaezya's The Tragedy of Nerak, a wild journey through several musical moods. In that case, the music, though highly eclectic and experimental, was also lot of fun. With this album, though, things don't seem as much fun. I admire the attempt, but the execution doesn't make for an entertaining listen. Interested listeners may want to check out either "Heavy" or "Four and a Half," the two best realized tracks on the album.

Spring and Youth: Between the Irony Posted by Goordin on 2014-06-27 05:15:23 My Score:
Have been listening to this album for a few days now and unlike your review i think it's a great and refreshing progressive metal with a great sound!
I give this album 8/10 only because the vocals is not the greatest.
thank you.
