J. D. Overdrive are not your typical Polish band. If you are thinking progressive metal like Riverside or Votum you might be disappointed. According to the press release the band plays stoner metal and to an extent I agree. This is pretty heavy stuff with elements of doom and thrash thrown in as well.
The band formed in 2007 under the moniker Jack Daniels Overdrive but later shortened it to J. D. Overdrive for obvious reasons. The current band lineup includes Michal Stemplowski (guitars), Wojciech Kaluza (vocals), Lukasz Jurewicz (drums) and Lukasz Pomietlo (bass). The riffs are intense and overall it is not a bad album but hasn't really grabbed me yet. One problem I have are the vocals. They are pretty rough around the edges and the screaming delivery I can do without. That said, if you are into that style it probably won't be a problem for you.
The album begins with the short "Bad Karma" featuring a radio/TV voice explaining a dire situation of mass murder and widespread panic. It is quite a menacing beginning and suffice to say this is not a 'happy' record. Next is the heavy "Born To Destroy" with its almost Metallica-like riffage before they slow down into a Black Sabbath style dirge. In "Funeral Stopper" the riffs are okay but the screaming vocals ruin it for me. In "Beware the Boozehound" the riffs are heavy and intense with one of the better guitar solos on the disc.
So for me this was somewhat of a mixed bag. Aside from some of the vocals it is a pretty good metal disc hence the three star rating. A metal Mind production.
