Rampaging guitar riffs, gutteral death metal vocals, faster-than-the-speed-of-light drum work, and tight arrangements all make up the debut album from Norway's MindGrinder. Featuring former members of bands like Windir, Zyklon, and Source of Tide, MindGrinder make no bones about their aggressive form of metal-it's angry, at times technical, and certainly not for the faint of heart. While the vocals of bassist Cosmocrator (yes, that's the name he goes by) take a bit of getting used to, the dual guitar work of Titan and Nitrous form an impress barrage of relentless riffs and intricate leads. More often than not though the songs all tend to sound the same, with similar breakneck speed tempos and all too familar "smash your head against the wall" mentality. It's tracks like "Starspawned Vision", with it's haunting instrumental opening and intense doom laden mid-section that stand out among the others, as the band even mixes in some clean anthem-like vocals amongst all the growling.
I made mention of the fabulous drum work earlier-no drummer is listed, and at times the precision drum barrage is so lightning quick and machine like you would swear it is a drum machine. Either way it's damn impressive. In summary, MindGrinder will win no awards for originality in the technical death metal genre, but they just might be a band to watch out for in the future.
