Born of Osiris: Tomorrow We Die Alive

If you have heard Born of Osiris (BOO) in the past, their newest release Tomorrow We Die ∆live will sound familiar. In-your-face production of metallic American djent-core, heavy screamed vocals, the ubiquitous open-note 7-string guitar chugging... if you have not heard BOO and if this is a description of music you dig, then obtain this recording, their 3rd for Sumerian Records.

If the Sumerian Records label is any indication, with a roster including Periphery and Dillinger Escape Plan, you can surmise that this is top-notch stuff. Honestly, for me, this is a departure from their previous recording The Discovery. That CD was loaded with solid tracks plus some electronic interludes which added to the nice pacing of the frequent brutality. The truth is that this is still some great heavy music. This new CD does have excellent keyboard/synth accompaniments used to augment the fact that the band is down to a single guitar player, Lee McKinney. Joe Buras on the keys does provide additional vocals that adds more depth to the harsh delivery of lyrics by lead screamer Ronnie Canizaro. Cameron Losch continues to assault the drums and my only complaint is that the drums sound canned. I'd prefer a more organic drum sound. Bassist David Da Rocha does rise above the mix on a few occasions and next time he should be turned up even more as I like what I hear when I hear him.

I often mix many groups together on my mp3 player and every time BOO comes on I'm pleased with what I'm hearing. This release does, however, have fewer guitar pyrotechnics than previous efforts. After a few spins I'm propelled in the direction of Veil of Maya and Within the Ruins but when all shuffled together Tomorrow We Die ∆live does fit right in amongst these peers.
