Nonpoint: Recoil

Nonpoint's third release Recoil continues the tradition of melodic heavy metal that the band has built its reputation on since 1997. Practically a staple on the Ozzfest tours the last few years, Nonpoint has also earned their stripes touring with bands such as Disturbed, Mudvayne, Sevendust, The Deftones, Linkin Park, and many others. After taking a bit of a break since 2000's Statement, the band is set to release this latest platter of heavy rock mayhem, and judging by the sounds contained in this promo copy, they should manage to sell quite a few CD's on this, their Lava Records debut.

Lead singer Elias Soriano has one of the better voices in the nu-metal genre, and his melodic vocal passages literally grab you in on the crunchy opener "The Same" or the radio single "The Truth." He lets his Latin heritage shine on the brutal Spanish sung "Rabia", complete with sledgehammer rhythms and thick & heavy guitar work from Andrew Goldman. Funk meets metal on the supercharged "Done It All Anyway" , and the band mixes super guitar crunch with catchy vocal harmonies on "Peace of Mind", one of the strongest tracks on the CD.

I do question why Nonpoint chose to cover Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" though. It sounds a bit forced, although Goldman does lay down some cool guitar effects. Otherwise, this is a pretty solid nu-metal release, with some great hooks, heavy guitars, and lots of attitude.
