Sweden's Stilla have released a brutal, yet majestic album here with Till Stilla Falla, easily one of the rawest, most violent black metal albums you are likely to hear this year. In the tradition of grand Scandinavian black metal, the pulverizing, cold ferocity is injected with brief passages of chilling atmosphere, which does help temper what would have otherwise been a non-stop full on assault. While there are mostly harsh, raging vocal shrieks (sung in Swedish), on occasion some clean vocals are dropped in, again, adding to the variety factor here. Tracks such as "Hinsides Dagen" and "Aldrig Döden Minnas." are absolutely pummeling, as cascading waves of tremelo picked guitar riffs, blast beats, and evil growling attack your senses, every so often a Mellotron or synth passage dropped in to add a certain prog-rock element. " Tidlösa Vindar" just crushes, with manic guitar riffs and evil vocals flying about the mix, but the band deftly drop in some folky acoustic guitar & Mellotron in spots that makes for an intriguing listen. The title track mixes glorious acoustic passages with brutal black metal savagery, showing how well rounded this band really is.
Till Stilla Falla is a well rounded, traditional sounding Norwegian black metal album that is plenty brutal, yet contains enough progressive passages & textures to keep things interesting. Great musicianship, harsh screams, clean vocals, and creepy atmosphere all make for a great combination. Well done.
