Gyre: Second Circle

Gyre's EP Second Circle is keeping me company today. There are dueling vocal styles ala Intronaut and Opeth. One can hear pummeling double bass, stop-start rhythms and progressive song structures. Opening track "All Revealing Eye" features some slick double-lead guitar licks and some stealth harmonics. The clean vocals are harmonized and the dirty vocals are indeed heavy but not indecipherable. I would rate the production a 4 out of 5, there could be more clarity to the mix but the EP is more than just listenable.

"Ever Devourer" opens with rhythmic syncopation; I imagine this could get a live audience quite energized. More time with the heavy vocals and I'm reminded of Tommy Rogers of Between the Buried and Me. The guitar licks/harmonies have a classic-thrash sound to them ala Slayer and Testament. Third track "Circle to Feed" starts solemnly and opens with clean vocals and cleaner guitars. The chorus sounds emotional with the vocal harmonies if you know what I mean? The midsection features multiple riffs including syncopated hammer-ons. The slappy-treble of the bass (irony?) comes through on this track; my favorite of the four on the EP. Last track "I Receiving All" is mid-tempo until the dirty vocals and the double-bass comes in; Quite a nice balance between the two building blocks.

There are many groups visiting the metal-genre-buffet and creating a flavor that draws from so many styles. Gyre is a talented group who is incorporating death metal, thrash, djent, and progressive metal into their "extreme metal" (author's quotes). Second Circle could be a promising introduction as long as Gyre continues to keep their rhythms fresh and building blocks interesting.
