Antigama: Meteor

This album was released on my brother's birthday, but I wouldn't give it to him. It's so loud and aggressive and crazy I just know he wouldn't like it. His taste in music is more traditional, more calm, a blend of light country (Willie Nelson, perhaps) and the classical. When it comes to hard rock and heavy metal, he mostly knows only what I've played for him and even that is limited to what he's willing to hear in the first place. This album would certainly frighten and disturb him. Maybe that's a good thing.

My point is that this album is so aggressive and so loud that the people I know who don't like metal would process it mostly as noise. Again, that isn't a bad thing. Metal, after all, often deliberately challenges conventions, always seeking to press the limits of music, emotion, and expression. For those of us who love it, loud and aggressive music is exciting and powerful, a means of thinking about music in terms that go beyond the conventional and the traditional.

I liked this album, but a little goes a long way. Fortunately, the songs here are all relatively short exercises not usually longer than 3-4 minutes. I don't think this band should attempt anything much longer than that, mostly because their songs don't do very much to distinguish themselves one from another. Some music is like that. I was also struck by the instrumental track "Turbulence" because of its departure from the band's overall sound and style. Given that I'm not the biggest grindcore fan, I was especially impressed with this band's crazed and loud take on that style. Whereas some bands like this seem to mimic anger and aggression, these guys channel it directly and openly. For the most part, it works.
