Frederiksen, Fergie: Any Given Moment

Sadly, as this album was released for reviews the news of Fergie Frederiksen's new battle with cancer became common knowledge. I have seen some fairly crass reviews along the lines of, "if he's going out with this record, he's going out on top." Whilst this is a facile statement to make, it also has some veracity to it as this is a very good album.

As you would expect the vocals are excellent throughout especially on the big ballad "I'll be the One" where Fredericksen underplays the emotion in a way which should be required listening for all the talent show hopefuls out there. It shouldn't be any surprise that this is a quality release, just look at the talent involved; Jim Peterik, Robert Sall and Alessandro Del Vecchio all co-write tunes and Del Vecchio continues on his way to becoming one of the go to producers on the melodic rock scene. If you have any form of pulse you will really enjoy the upbeat, uplifting charms of this modern AOR gem as best evidenced in "Time Will Change". Special kudos must also go to Issa Oversveen who provides the female vocals on "Not Alone" and gels wonderfully well with Fredericksen.

Frederiksen, Fergie: Any Given Moment
Posted by Michael Popke, SoT Staff Writer on 2013-09-10 11:50:32
My Score:

If you have any doubts about how well former Toto vocalist Fergie Frederiksen's voice has held up over the years, skip to the 11th and final track on his third solo album, Any Given Moment: A cover of "Angel Don't Cry" from Toto's overlooked 1984 pop-rock gem Isolation. Frederiksen sings with as much passion and pride as he did on the original, and he still hits the high notes with his soaring vocals.

His 62-year-old voice sounds just as honed on the previous 10 songs, singing with gusto — all of which makes even tougher to take the news that the singer's cancer, originally diagnosed in 2010, has returned.

Any Given Moment could be a lost Toto album from the mid-Eighties. Shiny AOR/pomp like "Price For Loving You," "Let Go" and "Time Will Change" glisten as they come out of your speakers and will put a smile on the face of anyone who ever owned a copy of Isolation. The title track speaks volumes about this man's resilience in the face of adversity, and hearing it now in light of the cancer re-diagnosis is more bittersweet than I'm sure even Frederiksen intended when he recorded it. The few missteps come during the ballad "I'll Be the One" and a few of the slower-paced songs that lack the excitement of the more upbeat material. But if buying this album means helping a hell of a singer endure a hell of a battle — Any Given Moment's opening track is called "Last Battle of My War" and the song before "Angel Don't Cry" is "When the Battle Is Over" — surely you can overlook a few minor glitches. Here's to you, Fergie…
