Mécanicos de Satán: Dos
Listening to this album is like finding money in your pocket—it's unexpected, surprising, and always welcome. Since my first listen, I haven't been able to get some of its stronger riffs out of my mind. I just loved the way this band blends their brand of doom metal with psychedelic rock. On the whole, the sound is tight, warm, and occasionally groovy, a tribute to an older sound and a refreshingly contemporary take on it. All the lyrics, so far as I could understand, are in Spanish. I only know a few words and phrases of Spanish so I can't really comment on what the songs are about; what I can say is that the overall effect of these songs is infectious and fun.
Even though I really liked the music, I was sometimes less impressed with the vocals. They aren't bad, but they sometimes sounded too tinny for my ears. I'm sure the effect is deliberate, but I would have preferred a little more warmth of expression from the singer's voice. Interested listeners should check out the instrumental title track ("Dos") for a good introduction to the band's sound. It's a mellower track than much of the album but it's a good tune. On the whole, this is a fun and consistent hour of music.
