Skies Are Illusionists is the instrumental progressive metal project of Cris Kailer, who performs all the parts on this two-track EP (save for drum sequencing courtesy of Ari Salvo). Replicating the Sun is a must hear for any fan of Cynic, Scale the Summit, and Animals As Leaders, as Kailer creates crushing riffs that collide with intricate lead lines and complex rhythms. Lots of staccato riffing and weaving arrangements abound on the first part, while the second part introduces some jazzy, folky, & proggy bits, though no less intricate, showing that Skies Are Illusionists can not only pound you over the heard with metallic intensity but also deliver some gentler moments as well. It's all very well done and quite intriguing on the ears, and let's see if this Pennsylvania musician can perhaps create a longer musical vision next time around and maybe even put together an actual band to really take this to another level.
