Polish act Squash Bowels sure know how to deliver some brutal, ugly grindcore, as their latest CD for SelfMadeGods Records Grindcoholism surely lives up to its name. This is some relentless, pulverizing stuff here, 14 tracks of non-stop brutality, complete with manic drum blasts, rampaging guitar riffs, and agonizing screams, growls, and bellows. I've always found grind to be somewhat of an acquired taste; I mean, it's less structured than death metal, and certainly more noisy, the speed factor having a little in common with black metal but lacking the drama & coldness of that style. There's little subtlety here on Grindcoholism, but see, that's the point, as tracks like "Naked Positive Act", "Trap", and the title track all just bludgeon the listener from start to finish, as manic bursts of brutal energy just attack, attack, and attack until there's nothing left but a bloody pulp. As is common with grind, most of the songs fall into the 2-3 minute range, so things are over almost before you realize it, and that's kind of the stamp of the whole album here, it pummels you senseless and then it's quickly done. If you like this sort of thing, Grindcoholism is actually kind of fun, but if not, there's plenty of other extreme metal releases out there that have much more to offer.
