Some damn fine riffs & grooves permeate would might have been a semi-ordinary metalcore outing on The Road Will End, the latest release from California act Armed for Apocalypse. In fact , these guys also inject a fair amount of sludge into their metallic attack, further helping out matters. Vocally, much of what you get here is by the numbers hardcore screams & bellows, so nothing new there, and every so often you'll hear a familiar sounding breakdown or riff that kind of has that 'been there, done that' feel. However, there's an earthiness, a grinding nature to tracks like "Better Worlds", "The Well", and "Built to Kill" that really does push all the right buttons. Besides the generic vocals, my main gripe here is that there's just not ENOUGH memorable riffs throughout the CD to really drive this thing; more often than not, it's the bass that's really making things happen here, like on the raging, pulsating "The Road Will End", which ultimately makes the guitar sound better, even though in reality the guitar riffs ain't all that great. Still, as far as sludgy, noisy metallic hardcore goes, this isn't half bad.
