German psychedelic doom act Obelyskkh return with their second release for Exile on Mainstream Records, titled Hymn to Pan. This four-piece really knows how to create some creepy soundscapes, as well as crushing heavy riffs, and it makes for an interesting listen throughout this six song CD. The opening title track does a great job at mixing the brooding atmosphere with the epic dirge passages, while "The Ravens" is just bombastic melodic doom, complete with floating vocals and massive riffs. "The Man Within" throws some harsh vocal screams into the fray, and the mournful "Heavens Architrave" even tosses in some complex prog rock bits in towards the finale. If you just like your doom to bash you over the head, there's "Horse", and for all the sludge fans out there, check out the nearly 24-minute "Revelation: The Will To Nothingness", an epic feast of tripped out guitar solos, distortion, feedback, and pounding rhythms.
Hymn to Pan isn't perfect, and it's a bit on the long side (all tracks exceed the 8-minute mark) but for a decent slice of psychedelic, spacey doom, it will do the trick.
