Metaphysics: Beyond the Nightfall

The Italian band Metaphysics combines musical elements from the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties on its debut album, Beyond the Nightfall. Despite heavily accented vocals from Davide Gabriele, this quartet plays rousing progressive metal that's accessible enough for newbies yet complex and different enough to sustain the interest of veteran headbangers.

Forgoing heavy for the sake of heaviness, Metaphysics' songs have a delicate thread woven through them, and not just on the big power ballads "Just a Dream?" and "When Everything Comes to an End." Acoustic passages abound, and plenty of musical breathing room allows the band to go beyond what many of its peers do. Just listen to the intricacies in "Fallin'" and "Letter From a Dead Man." But then "Searching For…" ventures into guilt-free power-metal territory, plus the addition of guest keyboardist Andrea De Paoli from Labyrinth provides extra depth and class.

We're a little late reviewing this 2012 release, but Beyond the Nightfall is still worth seeking out.
