Perversion: Pillars of the Enlightened
I don't know very much about the metal scene in Dubai, but the members of Perversion have been a strong part of it since 2006. I know there are people that study the metal scene in that part of the world; it would be very interesting to know whether Perversion has been a vibrant part of shaping it in their native country. I know they've gigged a lot in Dubai—I'd love to know how popular they are and to what extent their music reaches beyond national boundaries. I do know that the band released an EP a few years back and have also played at some European metal festivals. With this album, their first full-length, Perversion should have the chance to share their music with a larger audience.
The music on this album is generally quite strong, but it doesn't rise much above straightforward death metal. It works pretty well, but some listeners may find that things start to sound the same after a while. The technical aspects of the musical performances are pretty good; I especially enjoyed the blasting and aggressive drum parts on this album. From start to finish, the drums keep listeners grounded in the powerful and overwhelming experience of the music. The vocals are also good, but don't do much beyond their mid-range growl. The guitars are also good at establishing the basic groove and rhythm of each song but they need a little more power in establishing their riffs. The solos were pretty good, but never really stood out from one song to the next. I'd love to hear some faster solos from these guys or at least some lead parts that have a little more strength.
On the whole, the album makes for a rewarding listen, but it does get somewhat repetitive. For me, the best track on the album was "Dementia (of Devourment)." With this track, the band opens with their best riff and shows a slight tendency toward thrash. It's a good track, one definitely worth a listen.
