Masada: Hideous Rot
The nice thing about EPs is that they help give a quick impression that ideally will whet the appetite for even more music. With this release, Masada (made up of current and former members of Immolation, Crucifier, Goreaphobia, and Rellik) gives listeners an aggressive and energetic burst of underground and unpolished death metal. The bulk of the tracks are a good, if uneven, blend of death metal, melodic harmonies, and some very loud bass parts. It makes for a good listen, but the band seems mostly in experimental mode here, trying to figure out what their larger project should be.
The most unusual offering here—even the band refers to it as "bizarre"—is the second track "Fluteotherapy." Performed by Clive Jones from Black Widow UK, the song is mostly flute sounds, reed percussion, and some very anxious-sounding sexual breathing. The music is rhythmically odd and far-ranging, almost improvisatory and could possibly make for interesting listening on a more avant-garde recording. Frankly, the track is pretty uncomfortable, mostly because it refuses to seduce listeners' interest. Instead, it plops them right into the middle of something pretty intense and uncomfortable and refuses to let go.
I'd recommend listeners check out "Suffer Mental Decay" and "Toxic Unreality" and leave the rest behind. Some people may even enjoy the bizarre rapture of "Fluteotherapy."
