Rust2Dust: Daymare
Having recently teamed up with the small but consistent UK label Metalbox Recordings, Slovakian Metal hybrids Rust2Dust reissue their 2010 self released debut Daymare in the hopes of reaching a larger, farther reaching audience. And a wise decision it is too with Daymare revealing a hard hitting band capable of combining old with new and heavy with metal. Across eleven tracks everything from good old fashioned traditional metal to metalcore and modern melodic metal are crushed together with a spit of attitude and a fist of force, while still being considered enough to be able to take a step back. This means that pure force isn't enough for Rust2Dust, instead they take their foot off the gas and combine great clean vocals with convincing rasping growls, making the heavier moments, of which there are many, all the more potent and threatening.
Are they reinventing the wheel then with this conglomeration of ideals? Not a bit, but then while smacks of Pantera appear, explosions of Bullet For My Valentine traumatise, surges of Fear Factory descend, and smashes of Metallica convince (although often it is the 'Tallica's cover of Danzig's "Die Die My Darling" which springs to mind...), then the mix is still a worthy one. Also bear in mind that this outfit have appeared at Wacken and you'll begin to understand that they are no wet behind the ears youngsters from out in the wilderness. Something which shines through in the confident delivery of the slow building "Daymare", the mid paced drum assault of "Stay Awake", the kick to the head of "Lost" and focus changing melody of "Crime", all of which find a band sounding well beyond their debut effort.
Key to all this is singer Tomas 'Bujon' Buron, who without a trace of accent varies his attack through a mixture of approaches, equally adept at out and out shouting as his utilising a fine singing voice and a throat shredding growl. Guitarists Martin 'Semish' Semjan and Martin 'Ondro' Ondrejicka match growl for riff, and shout for solo, conjuring up a blend which holds the interest through its forceful attack and ever changing landscape.
Not quite an album to change the world, or worry the big boys of metal but with Daymare Rust2Dust have provided a more than solid beginning to what should prove to be a rather interesting journey. You could do much worse than take these first steps with them.
