Suidakra's 2011 release Book of Dowth was one of that years highlights in the whole 'Pagan metal' sphere, so it's no surprise that the German band have once again delivered another winner of Celtic flavored delights on their latest Eternal Defiance. Though this band has been putting out solid material since the late '90s, it's not until recent years have the band really been getting some press, and this latest extreme yet quite symphonic platter should see that trend continue. Band leader, guitarist & vocalist Arkadius has added a heaping amount of keyboard orchestrations here, adding a real epic flavor to the album, and new bassist Tim lends his clean vocals along with the awesome soaring flights from Tina Stabel, both of whom battle out with the vicious growls of Arkadius. Bagpies and banjo are added into the mix to give a folky feel to some of the arrangements, like on the raging "March of Conquest" and "Pair Dadeni". Other tracks such as "Beneath the Red Eagle" and "Rage for Revenge" offer a nice balance between furious death metal, folk, and symphonic rock with Celtic themes. Tina's lovely vocals permeate the lush "The Mindsong", and all three vocalists weave their magic on the complex speed metal burner "Defiant Dreams".
Epic, majestic, melodic, brutal, but most of all powerful, Eternal Defiance is further proof of Suidakra's talent for creating excellently textured heavy metal music. Check it out.
