Bollani, Stefano / Hamilton de Holanda: O Que Será
Italian pianist Stefano Bollani first played with Brazilian mandolin player Hamilton de Holanda in 2009. Both musicians began playing their chosen instruments at a young age and it shows on their latest release O Que Será, recorded live at the Jazz Middelheim festival in Antwerp, Belgium in 2012. Both are virtuosos and more importantly have a great chemistry together and folks, the playing is jaw dropping good.
The album begins with the tender ballad "Beatriz" with beautiful piano and lovely bandolim (a ten string mandolin). It is a sweepingly majestic piece with a nice melody as well. In the rollicking "Il Barbone di Siviglia" the two musicians play with a fiery abandon as they match each other note for note. "Caprichos de Espanha" features Eastern tinged bandolim; Holanda's playing is off the charts and as the piano enters with a forceful surge the song's intensity rises all the more. The rest of the album offers more of the same with intense solos and softer arrangements.
Listening to O Que Será is time well spent and the audience reaction certainly verifies that assertion. It's is an excellent performance and one that needs to be heard by jazz fans and musicians alike. Released on ECM Records.
