ZUD: The Good, The Bad, and the Damned

ZUD are a black metal band from Portland, Maine that infuses a healthy dose of melodic classic rock into an otherwise extreme metal sound on their debut The Good, the Bad, and the Damned. Truth be told, this is harsh, atmospheric US black metal at its core, which you can plainly hear on the brutal "Blood and Twilight", but the band mixes in some groove laden rock 'n' roll on the epic "Skull Shaped Bell" that shows a different side to their otherwise lethal attack. Plenty of scorching guitar solos to be found throughout the blast beats, ragged screams, and furious riffs, especially on "The Junction", and "Dendrite Fumes" has many layers & textures, easily the most progressive song here, but also those melodic rock tendencies rear their heads once again. All told, The Good, The Bad, and the Damned is a (dare I say) fun black metal album, and a safe bet for those that like the more melodic side of the genre.
