More than 30 years after releasing their first disc, New Model Army is still making incredibly vital music. And it remains as politically committed as it ever was. This current release, which comes after a series of set-backs including the death of their manager and the loss by fire of their studio, seems deeper and more involved than ever. The recording is stellar; engineering has allowed for some echo to occur, so that the sound resonates deeply and Michael Dean's drums appear almost tribal in nature. In fact, it is the percussion that drives this record. The disc varies between moody, soulful ballads such as "Pull the Sun" and storming sonic fury, such as "Stormclouds." Points of reference for me in this work is the UK band Levitation or Suzie and the Banshees around the time of Spellbound. This is a compelling work, rhythmically dense, and lyrically literate.
