With a roster that includes members of Suffocation, Decrepit Birth, and Disgorge, you just know that Deriding His Creation was bound to be a heavy hitting old school styled death metal release. Deprecated originally put this one out in 1998, and it's now being reissued by those fine folks over at Unique Leader, who are well known for their packed stable of extreme metal acts. The line-up for this EP was Matt Sotelo (Decrepit Birth, Soulside) on guitar, Terrance Hobbs (Suffocation, Criminal Element) on guitar, Derek Boyer (Suffocation, Criminal Element) on bass, Torrey Moores on drums, and A.J. Magana (ex-Defeated Sanity, ex-Disgorge) on bludgeoning vocals. Containing four songs of extreme brutality, Deprecated doesn't try to let loose the insane technicality of their other bands (though "Induced Deception" comes close), instead going for a straight forward, early '90s death metal attack that just pulverizes from start to finish. Though these songs lack variety and dynamics at times, there's a certain charm (if you can call death metal charming that is!) in the no-nonsense riffing & deep growls on cuts like "Realization of Betrayal" and the title track that is hard to ignore. No frills, just straight ahead death metal ferocity, quick in, quick out, roughly 15 minutes of pummeling, and that's all that's needed frankly. If you didn't check this one out 15 years ago, now's the time. Hopefully the band won't make us wait that long for a follow-up.
