Monsterworks describe their style as "progressive thrash supermetal" so make of that what you will as they sure aren't your usual metal band I'll give them that. With inspiration from rock and metal sub genres such as death, thrash, black and progressive metal and bands like Judas Priest, Pantera, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath but they do sound like something else. The group started out in New Zealand in the early 90's and eventually relocated to London.
Monsterworks' new and eleventh album Earth is a concept release "4.5 billion years in the making" referring to the changes our planet has gone through supporting different life forms along the way, starting with "From Dust and Gravity" when planet Earth was formed then the songs of Monsterworks' take us through the stages of evolution and those events that would lead to track seven the "Aeon of Man" and concluding with the title track "Earth".
When you take into account the gathering of musical influences it's hardly surprising that Monsterworks' Earth isn't your run of the mill metal album. And it's not just the music as their vocals also change in style and severity on Earth. Monsterworks' don't go in with all their heavy artillery blazing as"From Dust and Gravity" is more rocking than metal orientated, but if it's metal that you seek then you won't be waiting long as that's up next on "Late Heavy Bombardment" where they really turn it on. Following an acoustic introduction for "Last Universal Ancestor" as Monsterworks' show us more of that heavy side. Next up is "Oxygenation" and is that a guest appearance by King Diamond that I can hear ? "Powered by Fate" has some very dark metal vocals with music to match and those hefty riffs really do the trick, "Bookended By Extinction" is shorter with some fast and furious music packed into this hard hitter. an atmospheric side along with more metal for "Aeon of Man" and they really mix the heaviness with a combination of rock and metal on "Earth" a long track with quite a tranquil side also.
If you want to experience some "Supermetal" then you only have to take a closer look at Monsterwork's Earth.
