Kryptos: The Coils of Apollyon

One look at the band name and title The Coils of Apollyon, I was pretty sure I was in store for some raging black metal from this little band from Bangalore, India, but lo and behold Kryptos have instead delivered some pretty tasty old school styled metal for their third release and first for AFM Records. Taking cue from classic Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Manowar, Saxon, Kreator, and Tygers of Pan Tang, Kryptos have delivered a fun, headbanging good time here on this one, chock full of catchy melodies, crunchy riffs, galloping rhythms, and dual guitar harmonies. It's the latter that really drives The Coils of Apollyon, as each tune contains tasty Thin Lizzy/Iron Maiden styled twin guitar majesty from Nolan Lewis & Rohit Chaturvedi. Tunes like "The Mask of Anubis", "Serpent Mage", "Eternal Crimson Spires", and the title track provide many air guitar & neck snapping moments, as the blend of classic metal & thrash just works on so many levels. Lewis also handles the vocals here, and his Dave Mustaine-meets-Alexi Laiho-meets-Lee Dorian style fits in perfectly on these raging yet melodic songs. The rhythm team of bassist Jayawant Tewari & drummer Ryan Colaco provide the steady yet intricate foundation to the excellent "Spellcraft", a song that reminds of early Fates Warning.

This is seriously good stuff from Kryptos, and a must hear for anyone into vintage sounding heavy metal. Production values, songwriting and musicianship is top notch, and at this rate I see big things in store for this band in the very near future.

Kryptos: The Coils of Apollyon

My Score:

I finally received this album two days ago. It has been in my player since then. A great band indeed for those who enjoy a more vintage twin guitar sound. I have never liked death metal vocals, but Nolan rides the line perfectly, and is very understandable. This is one of the many things that sold me on the band. A most excellent listen! One that I doubt will fade in time for me!
