Pyrexia: Feast of Iniquity
Jackhammer drumming? Check. Growled vocals? Check. Trebly guitar throwing out 32nd and 64th notes? Check. Yep, this is all you need to have a decent death metal record these days, and Pyrexia has it in spades. While I found this enjoyable, I did not find a lot in it that I felt set it apart from other bands playing this style of metal. Clearly, the musicians are very talented, notably drummer Doug "Bones" Bohn, who has to play most songs at a tempo a lesser human might find impossible. Every now and again, a guitar solo might emerge from the murk, the words might be understandable, but after a while I began to feel a bit worn down, or perhaps it might be better to say beaten into submission. Which I think is the goal.
I think the disc might have benefitted from a song here or there which changed up the tempo and slowed things down. But it is full bore all the time. Pretty impressive, actually. And I am not sure a recording is the best way to experience the band; I suspect in person this would be a killer assault. But sonically, there is much of sameness here, and enjoyable as I found it, I would like a bit of variety.
