Walking Dead Orchestra, The: Architects of Destruction

Top-notch deathcore with the good sense to vary their approach from song to song. As always, I do get a kick out of the titles that deathcore bands use for their songs. In this case, add them all up and it sounds like they killed the emperor and ended up enslaving everyone else until they got a new leader, who then was just as bad as the last. Hey, this sounds like Hunger Games! Just kidding.

Like a lot of deathcore, this is really driven by the drumming, which is superb. Kudos go to Cedric for his ability to pile on the rhythms, which range from frantic to manic. Each song is relatively brief, but the overall effect is impressive. Over time the listener is hammered down but lifted up. It's weird, I know. One of the best songs on this disc is "Burden of the Flesh," which actually starts out at a reasonable pace but its continued repetition works to great effect. On the other hand, "Entombment of a Monarch" is full bore from the start. Most songs use a nice combination of a screaming lead over a second "comping" guitar. This is a good release, a good exemplar of the style.
