Wide Hive Players: Turnstyle

Wide Hive Players, released on the record label of the same name, are an accomplished group of jazz musicians with a new album Turnstyle under their belts. The band is led by the songwriting duo of Matt Montgomery (bass, piano, keys) and Gregory Howe (B3 organ). They are joined by Calvin Keys (guitar), Doug Rowan (saxophone), Mike Rinta (trombone), and drummers Thomas McCree and Josh Jones.

This is a very easy album to listen to but I am hesitant to label this as smooth jazz. The songs have plenty of depth with a rhythm section that settles into a steady 'pocket' groove, giving these songs the backbone they need. The horn work of Rinta and Rowan is pretty dominant throughout and Keys' guitar provides many highlights. He is an excellent player; just check out is superb Latin infused acoustic stylings in the album's first track "All The Wright Wrong Notes". It is a slow moving jazz tune with the piano giving it a forlorn feeling. The horn dominated "Changing Times" is another good one as well is the mellower "Winding Up" with a dreamy soundscape of spellbinding keys and delicate guitar passages. The album ends with "Where The Sidewalk Begins" featuring scintillating guitar runs and lots of horns. Really dig the trombone solo in this one.

It seems there is no shortage of quality when it comes to the jazz genre and Turnstyle is no exception. Jazz fans should find much to enjoy.
