Fans of early Candlemass need to run out and get themselves a copy of From Time...to Eternity, the sophomore release from Indiana doom act Stone Magnum. Now with new singer Nick Hernandez in tow, who takes over from guitarist Dean Tavernier, the band sound like a complete doom juggernaut. The rest of the line-up is rounded out by fellow guitarist Jim Brucks, bassist Ben Elliot, and drummer Brad Toth.
This is heavy, epic stuff, as lengthy tracks filled with crushing yet melodic guitar riffs and soaring vocals just assault your senses. The title track is grand & majestic doom, with Hernandez' Dio-meets-Tate-meets-Marcolin vocal style really impressing, and the monstrous crunch of "Lonely God" providing all those Candlemass and Black Sabbath styled juicy riffs. There's just a wall of sound that's so effective on cuts like "The Gallows of Ohrdruf" and "In Tongues They Whisper", clearly meant to satisfy any doom fan, and toss in some shredding guitar solos and you have a formula that flat out works. The riffs of "By an Omen I Went" are irresistible, and the nearly 8-minute "In the Garden of Beasts" offers up some creepy doom laden atmosphere as well as moments of galloping Iron Maiden styled power metal for a wild ride.
From Time...to Eternity is highly enjoyable doom, plenty heavy, always melodic, and with some serious vocal and guitar chops. Don't miss out on this one!
