Jeremy & Progressor: Searching for the Son
Jeremy & Progressor is a collaboration between American musician Jeremy Morris and Uzbekistan native Vitaly Menshikov. Both musicians play a variety of instruments and do an excellent job. Joining the duo are Jon Dawson (keyboards, guitar, bass, drums percussion, loops), Who alumni John "Rabbit" Bundrick (drums), Fromuz mainstay Albert Khalmurzaev (keyboards) and Bill Morris (trumpet, saxophone).
Thematically speaking, Searching for the Son is about finding one's spirituality and seems to be of a deeply personal nature. If religious lyrics bother you it will be best to look elsewhere. That being said, if you do not have a problem with the religious overtones there is some excellent music to be had.
Let me start by saying if you like '70s psychedelic rock like Pink Floyd and The Beatles you should get a lot of mileage out of this one. Morris sounds uncannily like John Lennon so there is a definite Beatles vibe coursing through the album. A prime example is the darker hued "Distant Light" with its Beatle's inspired vocals and ambient acoustic rhythms. A variety of keys and synths are also used in abundance to create a moody atmosphere. Halfway through the rhythms build leading to some rollicking piano motifs, organ swells and bursting guitar soli resulting in an ambitious piece of music.
The title track builds in intensity with an electronic edge to the sound. I really like the addition of sax and trumpet and the guitar solo took me back to the psych infused '70s.
In "Future Flight" the intro has '70s Floyd written all over it with Gilmour-like clean guitar and with the Lennon infused vocals it is easy to imagine what a Lennon fronted Pink Floyd may have sounded like. Lots of keys and synths round out this psychedelic flavoured package.
In "Wings of the Wind" the spacey intro leads to darker tones and Vitaly's razor sharp guitar coursing through the background layer. The instrumental break of trumpet, sax and electric piano is very cool.
This is an excellent album filled to the brim with rich orchestrations, British sounding psychedelia, Beatles style lead vocals and catchy progressive sounds. Fans of The Beatles and '70s music in general should find much to enjoy.
