Brighton act Anacondas recently formed out of the ashes of hardcore group Johnny Truant, and their brand new debut album Sub Contra Blues is a pretty solid collection of varied extreme metal, sludge & post rock. Throughout this album, the trio sure know how to create some huge riffs, as evident on such bruisers as "Cold Blooded, Warm Hearted", "Simianimal", and the monolithic "Down By the River". Think Mastodon-meets-Pelican-meets-Meshuggah-meets-Down...sort of. Waves of feedback and distorted riffing permeate the undulating title track, while the driving stoner anthem "High Horse" might just have some of the most kick ass riffs you've heard in some time, as well as pulverizing rhythms and effective gruff vocals. "The Witches" also unleashes some tremendous low end guitar fury and post rock textures for a crushing yet melodic attack.
Prosthetic Records certainly have a find in this little UK band. Stuart Hunter(guitars), James Hunter (bass), and Tim Newman (drums) are a force to be reckoned with, so remember the name Anacondas, as I think you'll be hearing a lot about them in the months & years to come.
