Speaking to the Deaf: This Equipment Must Be Hearted

Speaking to the Deaf, an Italian Metal-Core band whose latest effort is entitled This Equipment Must Be Hearted (SG Records), is a group that tries to blend a bunch of different musical genres onto one disc. Ranging from Melodic Death to Alternative to Metal-Core, Speaking to the Deaf seem to be all over the place on this release, albeit aggressive.

Their band name and title of this record aside, Speaking to the Deaf are not going to win any award for breaking any new musical ground. In fact, I found this record to be quite lackluster at best. Following the atmospheric sounds of the opening track, "This Equipment Must Be Hearted", the album starts up with "My Sacrifice", a somewhat Thrash sounding song with some odd metered segments and off kiltered time changes that don't really seem to flow very well at all. Kind of all thrown in together and hope for the best. Another track, "Hold Your Horizon", filled with screaming and shouting and guitar riffs that sound like they were held over from 1986 with no imagination and sub-par execution. Think of any generic underground Thrash Metal band from the mid 80's and add in some growling vocals of today and you are fairly close.

This 9 track record is not the greatest produced effort for sure, and with less than pleasing sonic tones, it helps to make this record forgettable. The drums sound like a drum machine, while the guitars also leave something to be desired. Vocal performances range from the clean to the Cookie Monster variety of screaming and growling, with none of them being particularly interesting. Overall this was a record that I would never find myself listening to again. It was just flat out boring and unoriginal.
