Death Toll Rising: Infection Legacy

Death Toll Rising released their demo all the way back in 2004, nearly ten years ago. Since then, they've released a couple of full-length albums and have now given listeners their third. At nearly ten years, this band may be one of the longer-running death / thrash bands out of Alberta. They are certainly one of the most aggressive. Even though I haven't heard much of their early music, I do know that they formerly drew on a rather gorier vein, delivering songs with titles that could easily come from bands like Carcass. Things are certainly not softer here—just listen to any one of the songs—but the overall impression is a slight change of tone. I'm not sure if the band is moving on to other interests or what, but the music is certainly as strong as it can be.

For fans of aggressive death and thrash metal this album gives plenty to enjoy. Most of the songs just pound away, the drums leading the charge. Instead of a straight ahead death metal album, however, this band like to mix things up with interspersed lead dual guitar lines, occasional tempo changes, and hints of melody. On the whole it makes for good listening. I recommend checking out tracks like "Slaughter to Survive" and "Revelation Despair." I was interested to notice a track on here with the title "Crack Open a Cold One." I don't have the lyrics in front of me, but somehow I doubt this is your typical party song.

This is a strong album from a band that continues to grow and mature with each new release.
