Kuolemanlaakso: Musta aurinko nousee
This EP was recorded at the same time as the band's last full record, Uljas uusi maalma. But where the full record is described as the band as "epic," this short EP varies its attack and demonstrates both resilience and technique. Further, the EP is designed to be released as a limited digipack CD and on colored vinyl of 100 copies each in 3 colors.
The record is a nice combination of typical death metal growled vocals combined with a more melodic style of epic guitar doom. There are huge gigantic power chords , undercut with a current of trudging undertones. All of this with perfectly undecipherable vocalisms, none of which I can understand anyway since it is all in Finnish. If I were to provide a comparison, to me this comes closest to Celtic Frost, a point also noted by the band as one of their influences. However, it uses a deeper guitar mix than the Frost does. Live, this must be killer. I am not sure that the record really does this justice.
By the way, based on the picture of the band, I am not sure I would want to run into them alone in the forest. But back to the music. It's good, it's heavy and it rocks hard. Play very loud.
