Beehoover: The Devil and His Footmen
For those that think that drum and bass is limiting, this new disc will set them straight. These guys make a holy noise, and show amazing versatility by playing compositions in a number of different styles, from death metal to melodic prog. And all using only a (heavily fuzzed) bass and drums. I profess to not being the largest fans of drum and bass, but if you played this for me without giving me any information at all, I'd have loved it and would not actually have thought it was just drum and bass. There is a lot of sound on this, some of it absolutely pulverizing in intensity. "Monolith," this first song, is typical. It uses all the tropes of a standard metal song, and with only two instruments sounds so much bigger. "Egoknights and Firearks" uses repetition to good effect. "Rooftop" is more stoner-like in nature, slow and dense. The "Interludes" are short little compositions that act as transitions. The first is light and ethereal; the second is beat-tastic; and the third is heavily echoed and spacy. These three songs surround two mighty compositions, "Boy vs. Tree" and the great "Morning Sun." "Dear Mammoth" is the most prog-like song on the disc, sort of melodic and epic. "My Mixtape Sucks Big Time" is more like death metal, while "Honeyhole" begins as ambient before crunching to its conclusion. Whatever you think of drum and bass, this'll prove you wrong.
