Alastor: Syndroms of the Cities (remastered)
Metal Mind Productions has remastered the Polish Thrash outfit Alastor's album, Syndroms of the Cities, that was originally released in 1989. This remastered edition has been released in a Digipak format and contains 10 tracks and the original artwork.
Alastor, for those of you that are not familiar with them, sound like a poor man's version of either early Flotsam and Jetsam or maybe a Death Angel with those higher register Thrash vocals that were common at the time and sounding at times somewhat like a Bobby Blitz from Overkill. As this was 1989, there are OBVIOUS Metallica rip-offs throughout, mixed with the hyper speed riffing that at times seems to be fighting for the same frequencies. Alastor have riffs on this record that are SO fast that they could barely play them correctly which helped to the music's overall lack of appeal, along with subpar musicianship, especially coming from the guitar players with their awful lead work.
For underground Thrash from 1989, Alastor's Syndroms of the Cities, isn't terrible but it isn't particularly good either. The record production is barely decent, so sonically it doesn't really grab you and their songs are just alright. When this album originally came out, there were so many bands that were just simply better and those bands also weren't trying to re-use Metallica riffs either, but Metal Mind Productions, as usual, do a great job with their Digipak packaging. The CD looks great and the original cover artwork is pretty cool, but it's the music inside that is a let down.
