Magenta Harvest: Volatile Waters

Magenta Harvest have quite the pedigree, counting among their members current or former Finntroll, Chthonian, Observant, Twilight Moon, …and Oceans, and Havoc Unit members. Plus, two current members named Timo – it does not get any more metal than that! Now, the serious question, who among us is going to tell them that Magenta Harvest is the wimpiest, non-metal, women's perfume sounding band name ever. Whether they take our advice or not, the songs on Volatile Waters, their first full length dropping January 10, 2014 on Inverse Records, sound like they spew forth from a band with a much more menacing moniker, say Flesh Corpuscle or Pube Puncher. I mean c'mon, Magenta Harvest?!? (Are you getting the picture I'm struggling with the band name?)

Ok Eric, take a breath and focus on the music, which, for the most part, is highly entertaining Death Metal. "Spawn of Neglect" and "Interrupted Fleshwork" stand out as quintessential Death Metal numbers, ala Amon Amarth and Dark Tranquility. There's nothing mind-blowingly complex here, just straight forward brutal guitar riffs supported by a rock solid rhythm section, both driving relentlessly below the superbly evil vocals of Mathias Lillmans. Volatile Waters may very well be the first in what I hope, is a trend to reincarnate classic Death Metal. I mean why not, everything else has gone retro, why should Death Metal stand on the sidelines.

Magenta Harvest is certainly on the right track with Volatile Waters and if they could only solve their band name issue, their next release could be a big winner.

Volatile Waters will be available from Inverse Records, January 10th 2014.
