Isolation Process, The: The Isolation Process
This is an excellent, atmospheric slice of melancholy metal cum doom cum psych-styled music. What is even more impressive is that only 3 musicians make all the noise, using nothing more than (heavily processed) guitar, bass and drums. When I try to find some sort of reference for this two odd pairings come to mind: first, Nirvana if they were heavier and willing to modify their guitar sound a lot, and the neo-psych band Levitation, though here The Isolation Process does not reach for the same level of manic craziness that Levitation did. It's a heady mix. Most of these songs move at a slower pace, but they also develop a significant level of drama in doing so. Singing is gorgeous, and kudos go to Thomas Henriksson for those vocals.
The band itself, which is a reconfiguration of Lingua and Come Sleep, claims a different set of influences: Deftones, Crowbar and Depeche Mode. Of the three, the Depeche Mode influence is most noticeable, and I mean this is a good way. All the songs follow a somewhat similar tactic, opening with sort of slowly and then building tension moving forward, at times working toward some pulverizing beats. A classic here is the song "The Dead End," which is simply powerful, with highly emotive singing over the guitar noise. It's a highlight on a disc of great compositions. This debut is well worth having; I strongly recommend it.
