Swedish death metal veterans Evocation have thrown together a little covers EP to hold their fans over till their next full length release, and it's a good one, featuring some killer tunes that extreme metal lovers will certainly recognize. Picking tracks that Evocation's riff-heavy style can perfectly complement was the first step, then executing them well is the icing on the cake, and the band do a fine job here. Bolt Thrower's "...For Victory" is massive sounding, with Vesa Kenttäkumpu & Marko Palmén's crunchy riffing leading the charge, and Carcass' "Corporal Jigsore Quandary" grooves, bashes, and boils, Thomas Josefsson delivering a mighty fine and quite evil vocal performance. "You Suffer" from Napalm Death is over before you take a breath, and "Enigma" from underrated legends Edge of Sanity is given royal treatment from their fellow Swedes, with Josefsson filling in the Dan Swano vocal lines perfectly but giving it his own stamp. Quite possibly the most surprising & rewarding cover choice on the EP. Closing it out is a lethal version of At the Gates' mainstay "Terminal Spirit Disease", complete with jacked up guitar riffs and pulverizing rhythms in true Evocation fashion. As a covers EP goes, this is a good one, though quite brief.
