It wasn't that long ago that I reviewed the latest album by metal band Artical with the popular Mark Boals(ex. Yngwie Malmsteen and Royal Hunt amongst others) on vocals, well now there is another and his second album with the band Iron Mask following Black Death in 2011. Despite having accumulated a considerable library of power metal related releases over time Iron Mask is one band that I was not acquainted with, until now that is. Dushan Petrossi Iron Mask's talented guitarist and founders other band is the symphonic power metal group Magic Kingdom, and I do have that groups latest impressive album so this gave me high hopes for the new Iron Mask release.
Iron Mask's Fifth Son Of Winterdoom has plenty for fans of catchy metal. Dushan Petrossi's guitar work on Fifth Son Of Winterdoom is a highlight as you venture through the twelve songs which do vary in style be it power, neo classical or more rocking style metal. "Back Into Mystery" a mid paced upbeat rocker starts proceedings then the prompt neo-classical metal of "Like A Lion In A Cage" kicks in, where the guitar and keyboards are on fire and Boals' is right at home given his past with acts like Yngwie Malmsteen and Ring Of Fire. "Only One Commandment" is slower and powerful with a catchy chorus. "Seven Samurai" actually makes me think of the band Annihilator, this album certainly has variety. "The Picture Of Dorian Grey" may be the final track but Iron Mask saved the best for last as this classic tale is reworked in a hard driving power metal style.
With a fantastic song like "The Picture Of Dorian Grey" there is a lot to ike about Iron Mask's latest and Mark Boals's vocals suit the material so well.
