Some of you might recognize the name Kevin Hufnagel, as he is the guitarist for both Dysrhythmia & Gorguts, two bands known for complex, shredding heavy metal. On this new solo outing Ashland, the guitarist sets aside his electric guitar and instead focuses on baritone and eight-string ukulele instrumental music, which is quite a departure from what we normally hear from him. Though acoustic and at times lovely, there's a haunting and intricate element permeating much of Ashland, as Hufnagel shows his talent for crafting weaving musical lines together that always keeps things enticing. Most of the tracks here are brief and tend to almost blend into each other, but "The Gift", "Perpetual Shadow", "The Otherness 1", and "The Dust of Centuries" are especially nice and feature some wonderful picking techniques and alluring melodies. Ashland is definitely worth checking into if you want to hear a blazing metal guitarist doing something a bit off the beaten path. Click on the link below to investigate further.
