Germany's Abyssous deliver some old school death metal on their debut for Iron Bonehead Productions, titled ...Smouldering. This is dark, evil, cavernous stuff, right on down to the claustrophobic production, which only adds to the malevolent quality of it all. "Burial Sea", "Invocation", and the crushing "Inverter" all seem like unearthed recordings from a late '80s death metal tape box, and I guess that's kind of the charm of something like this. Deathtrader (Bass, vocals), Jonty Lava (Guitars), and Assassor (Drums) have done a commendable job honing in on the feel of those early Death, Entombed, and Morbid Angel albums, so if you crave those old school death metal sounds, chances are you'll get a lot of mileage out of this one.
