Deep is the Italian duo of Tiziano and Francesco. One loves grunge, stoner, and acoustic music, the other favors doom & black metal. Vol. 1 is the meeting of these two minds and their debut on Transubstans Records. First things first, the production of Vol. 1 is mired in mud, and while I'm not sure if that was the intention, the end result is a sludgy, soupy mess that is no doubt going to turn off some listeners due to its bad demo quality. The vocals are spooky and effects laden, at times buried way back in the mix and others too far up front, with the super fuzzed guitar riffs just saturated with distortion. As far as underground doom goes, tunes such as "The Wizard & The Mountain" and "Hyperventilation Revelation" are actually pretty decent, and "Sonic Mantra" reaches some Black Sabbath/Saint Vitus moments that show that these two guys have studied the greats of the genre well. Overall, some work needs to be done here, and a better production that doesn't sound like they recorded this thing on cassette in their garage would certainly help. But, on the basis of the three very good tracks I mentioned, I think we could see the beginnings of what might be a doom act to look out for.
