George Cotsirilos Trio: Variations
Variations is guitarist George Cotsirilos's sixth album and third by his latest trio consisting of Robb Fisher (bass) and Ron Marabuto (drums). It is a modern jazz recording with Cotsirilos's superb guitar dominating the sound. With the trio format there is abundant room for all three instruments to shine and these musicians take full advantage as this is one of the best trio albums I have heard in a while. The chemistry between these musicians is almost palpable.
The album starts with "A Walk For Ethel" and its swinging, classic style sound. Cotsirilos's liquid-like guitar lines take center stage almost immediately. His tone and note placement is impeccable and while he may not fill the album with fiery pyrotechnics his style is a near perfect fit for the trio format. With only three instruments there can be no room for mistakes as each instrument is given plenty of space.
"Doce Presenca" presents us with a subtle Latin groove and pretty acoustic guitar that takes on a lilting flamenco style deeper into the song. The Latin vibe continues with "Sambrosia" where Robb Fisher gets to show his stuff on bass. This clearly isn't a one man show as bass and drums have ample opportunity to provide subtle touches throughout.
"Blues For The J Man" is another treat that has Cotsirilos letting loose a bit more while the thoughtful "But Beautiful" is just that; a lovely acoustic number featuring the trio's more tender moments.
Variations is a very good jazz album. Guitar fans rejoice…
