Islander: Pains

Look: some bands and some albums just aren't for me. I try to write fair-minded reviews, but I don't like everything and don't want to inflate my comments when I'm just not impressed. I also don't want to pile on a bunch of negative remarks just for their own sake.

With all that wishy-washy dithering aside, I wasn't terribly impressed with this album. Islander certainly plays with logs of energy. It's also impressive that they got H. R. of Bad Brains to contribute to one of the tracks. The music here, though, is so caught up with nu-metal stylings that the whole thing feels like a turn backwards than a step forward. At times, there's nothing wrong with that. Tons of bands still sound like Black Sabbath. At other times, though, the style on display just seems played out, a think of the past. I'm sure there's an audience for this style of metal, but I was never part of it.

Islander has been performing for a while. This EP marks their debut with Victory Records. For fans of nu-metal or completists who must own everything touched by anyone in Bad Brains.
