Pro-Pain: The Final Revolution

Pro-Pain has been at it for over twenty years and they show no signs of slowing down. Sure, they've had lots and lots of line-up changes, but as long as vocalist / bassist Gary Meskil is around, this band will surely keep producing new jams. Mostly a hardcore / thrash band, Pro-Pain has typically offered listeners uncompromisingly heavy songs filled with political commentary, brute force, and thoughts on living in a crazy world.

On this album, the band hits their groove right away with the killer track "Deathwish." From there, they move quickly through several more fast and aggressive tracks. There isn't much new here in terms of the music, but the lyrics are slightly less focused on politics and more invested in thinking about the problems of the common man. As Meskil puts it, "all of my lyrics come from the heart via life's experiences. I'm passionate about the world, where it's heading, and about my role in it. I sing about the plight of the common man." The result is mostly several urgent pleas to live as best you can while surrounded by all sorts of chaos and confusion. Meskil sings with urgency and force, almost chanting at times. He has a rough voice that fits this style of music perfectly. As for the rest of the band, everything sounds tight and together. I was especially impressed by the guitars on this album. They harmonize seamlessly, always making it sound easier than it really is. I was even more impressed with Adam Phillips' guitar solos; he playing is consistently crisp, clear, and fast. At times, his solos reminded me a little of Alex Skolnick's work with Testament.
